8 ounce speciman

Hi Bill and All,

I had to go out of town today and so I took a little detour over by my patch for a couple of hours of beeping this morning. Anyhow I found this speciman yesterday, my gold scales overload at 5 ounces, so I had to weight in on a postal scale, it's 8 ounces. I keep finding these black rocks that look like meteorites also... it's the second one now. The speciman was 16" deep and it was a good loud signal on the 4000 with a 16" mono. Sorry the pictures arn't the best... I took photo lessons from John B. I have it cooking in nitric acid now, I'll try to scan some better pictures in a few days.

Well if you have it in nitric acid and it is a meteorite then you can kiss it ALOHA as I am pretty sure it will be destroyed.

Oh well!

Aloha,

Great find! :whoopie: :whoopie: But I don't know what you hope to accomplish by soaking it in nitric acid. I could get it just as clean with a toothbrush, baking soda and water. That is one specimen that would benefit from a hydroflouric acid treatment to remove some of the quartz and expose more gold. It could substantially increase the value if done properly.

BTW- I don't think those are meteorites.

Can't wait to see a fine pic of it cleaned up. Personally I think nitric is a bit extreme on the clean up side too. Depending on the gold and its alloys, it sometimes can dull the surface.

Hydroflouric dissolving the silica and leaving just the gold would really make an eye popper. But 8 oz is just a super find no matter what. I have been on the hunt for 30+ years and have yet to find an ouncer!

Hi Mr Goldstudmuffin and All

Yep Russ you deserve the Mr in your name  !! Russ you and Russ Ford are cousins right :hmmmmmm: ?? Better be careful them space rocks will grow on you :woohoo: ?? Besides you can be famous again since Larry said he wasn't gonna wack the piece he bought :grrr01: !! You could take a piece to ASU and die of old age waiting to see WTF it is :banged: !! Hey Russ where's the gold in that rock :innocent0009: ?? Nitric won't do squat to that rock  . You either need Hydofloric acid or a hammer to ruin it :Huh_anim]: ?? Reno Chris and I saw a rock with virtually no gold showing at the TCC gem show with a $5000.00 price tag on it  . I only wish some of the people especially Aussies could see what they are trashing when they dolly up species for gold value :nutty: !! Are you certain there aint copper or some other mineral in it :POsmiley01: ?? Maybe you could put a microscope on it take a pix and show us the gold  ?? PS. Call me when you get a chance I have important info for you :comp: !! Happy Huntin John B.

Thanks for all the advice guys, the picture makes it look like there is more gold than there really is, I'm guessing there's about a 1/2 ounce showing plus what's in the middle of it. I've used Hydofloric acid before and don't like having it around the house, I'm not going to use Hydofloric acid on this speciman because I'm afaird I'll destroy it. I'll try to scan some pictures of it later.

Chuck, yep my heart skiped a couple of beats. After I got it out of the whole it took me about 5 minutes to find it. Everytime I tried to pin-point it I kick it out of the way because it was to big, I finally realized the signal was coming from that big chunk of quartz. :woohoo:

John, I'd take you in there if you could get those pesky meteorites out of my way. There's only one problem... THERE'S NO ROAD into the patch, you have to hike in over a high Mt pass! :banged: And it's a good hike in there, thats why I can't seem to find my pick. I guess we could rent you a pack mule and put a seat belt on it so you don't fall off. :rofl2: :hmmmmmm:

Hi Russ, Steve ,Stan and All

I am 200% certain the 2 small stones Russ has found are Space Rocks :whoopie: , I also almost would venteur to wager they are H chondrites :twocents: . I have never seen them up close or in person only the same pictures you have seen :ph34r2: . Besides Russ ain't as stupid as he looks he would never put his space rock in acid :laught16: ?? I'm curious Russ on the wearing seat belts while ridding an ass :confused0013: ?? I never tried it but I might like it I hate falling off and I'm scared of heights  !! Happy Huntin John B.

Hi John B and All:

Given the context in which that rusty rock was found, it probably is a meteorite after all. There's an old foundry about 85 miles south of here where the ground is littered with crap that looks exactly like the rusty rock Russ found. I was probably hasty in original opinion but that was my first impression.
