Guest meteorite huntress
Paul, is it? I think it is not really necessary to find a bigger one. More rare and tiny is just as well! Maybe you already have one. Did you cut it and checked it out? One never knows. You do know that there are sometimes different meteorites found in the same location! Then get a number and get it classified and put it in the Meteoritical Bulletin. http://meteoriticalsociety.org/simple_temp...?code=pub_intro Getting numbers is neat, because then you would know if you are the first from that location and its kept confidential. Happy hunting, Moni (happy smiling)
Mr-Meteorite
Hi Moni, For a meteorite hunter like myself, getting provisional numbers is fine. Sometimes I get them, and then again sometimes I don't. Rhian Jones doesn't mind because they are simply not necessary. Since I broadcast pretty much everything I do to the world, it doesn't matter to me. But, I have told my friends (Paul and Mike included)that provisional numbers are not necessary, at least not until your done hunting the area. In some instances getting provisional numbers before finishing hunting the area is not even a good idea. Besides, how many is enough? Would anyone think we still need them for Gold Basin, Franconia, or Glorieta? I think not. See, provisional numbers are not really confidential at all. If anyone called Rhian and said that they found a meteorite in a particular area and received from her any number other than 1, they would then know that other meteorites have been found there and that theirs wasn't a fluke.(If they really found one, maybe they lied just to see what the numbers were) They would then concentrate efforts in that particular area. Probably finding many more. If Paul and Mike were hunting an untouched dry lake bed in California. All one would have to do is call and ask Rhian what the numbers are up to for that lake bed. If the answer was zero then one could deduce that Paul and Mike were obviously not making finds and getting provisional numbers from there. Then they simply ask about other lake beds till the find the one. If Mike and Paul wanted to get provisional numbers they could. However, any unscrupulous meteorite hunter with records of past provisional numbers would pretty much know where they were hunting as soon as the provisional numbers went up. P.S. Paul and Mike are making some great finds, I've seen them all, heck, i've been there for most! Mike may even have something rare! We'll have to wait and see..... dez-perate 4 nugs
I personaly am not one who smears his or her name all over the place looking for recognition. I collect meteorites because i love doing it. I love the hunt, i love the comrodery with my friends, and I love seeing one last shooting star before I roll over and go to sleep after a full day of hunting. The simple thought that I am holding something that used to be floating around in space is absolutly awe inspiring to me. Thats why i hunt space rocks, not for fame and fortune, or getting my picture all over the web or in magazines. The only praise i need is for my friends mike and ruben to say "hey thats a nice rock u found there" As for getting a number, maybe if i find one somewhere that hasnt been pounded by every other hunter I might, but that would only be so that other people who enjoy this hobby as much as me could go out and try to find one there. Paul it is Hi, Paul it is, Keep up the good work! Thanks for the pictures. I would not get any provisional numbers untill you are done hunting the area and have all of your field work done. Just like Ruben said ,why have every fragment numbered or even get a provisional numbers! Sonny www.nevadameteorites.com
