  1. I Did a house demolition at an old homestead in Wa. this summer. Tons and Tons of trash was hauled away. When it was all done (last week) I got to swing my old (antique?) Minelab Soveriegn xs2a pro on the front yard for (only) a few mins. I found a couple of wheaties, and this cool old mini cap gun, action still works! I bought that machine new in 2000 i believe and it is still beeping along, although heavy and awkward, i can still find deep coins, and discriminate with decent accuracy. Unbelievable amounts of iron trash, that was probably masking most good targets but was able to pick out a few treasures! Hopefully Ill be able to pick up where i left off this week.
  2. Ok, so after dinner at a friends place in Idaho, I get asked to identify this hunk of____________??? The only info I have about it is that it was givin to his father 20 years ago, and he lived in Nevada... I know not a lot to go on. I cannot tell what the white is, it is fine grained rounded nodules, possibly quartz but doesnt look like any quartz iv seen under 10x magnification, harder and clearer than calcite. The color varies from deep blue to clear, mostly opaque, waxy luster, some striation of lighter color in places. It is very heavy. Any ideas?

Any prospecting supply stores in Tucson?

Theres a booth at the Tanque Verde swap meet that carries a small selection of Pans, picks, miners moss, classifiers, snuffer bottles, etc... I picked up a couple things from them last year and they are there every weekend. Couldnt describe where its located but im sure if you ask around youd be able to find em. Morey's Detector sales had good little selection but I think he sold the shop a couple years ago, might be worth a call though. Lookin for anything specific??

    Lets hope this holds....

good job man! Im hoping third times a charm for me out there this year!
  5. microsniper

How about this one?? (mineral mystery)

yes it does, and has a similar cleavage(?) as obsidian. The waxy luster and the fact that its so heavy for its size (sorry no weights and measures)...make me wonder. it looks like its been dyed.

    Australia?

Hey all, Im planning a trip down under finally and I'm just starting my real research. learning about tengraph , geomaps, miners rights, access to leases and tenements etc... Got basic areas, and Gold and Ghosts volume 2,3,4... (willing to share these by the way). Probably going to join one of the prospecting clubs in western Australia too. Iv got my SDC and the 4500.. (would get a GPZ but I need plane tickets!!). I would love to make some connections with folks who are there, here, or both. Or If anyone here would enjoy sharing their experiences of past trips that would be very interesting! Cheers!

    WIN SPECIMEN GOLD!

    Ill go $56.60.
  9. Well after coming home with my tail between my legs from quartzsite, last weekend.... today i finally beat the skunk! Iv been working this area for a few weeks now and the chunks keep getting bigger and rougher... Seems like a good sign! just keep wondering just how far a nugget can travel (in the desert conditions) and still be all chunky and crystally lookin? All of the nuggets iv found in this area have been well worn and rounded, except for these which iv found further up the drainage. Not much but steep hillsides left at this point. The two skunk busters on the scale came out of the same hole.. love that! .

  11. Was out yesterday to a spot I found some various gold bits and decided to pull back some overburden to get down to some fresh bedrock (thanks for the inspiration Adam) and found a couple of dinks to start the day with. I got tired of all the hard work and decided to head upstream to seek out some exposed bedrock. I walked past a few spots Id detected last year (found nothing before) and spent the next couple hrs being impatient and of course not finding anything but rusty bits. I was getting tired and decided to head back to the truck and maybe go check out another local. Well, on my way back I walked over a small patch of bedrock that id detected before with no luck and just stopped. I looked at a small crack and for some reason (intuition??) said what the heck and and decided to go over it again. Instantly I got a super loud couple of targets in one coil pass. I figured id just go ahead and get that pesky junk out of the way and keep going. Probably three targets there, all inverted signals. Junk for sure....... yeah well I was shocked when under and inch of sand stuck in the crack, out pops this beauty! about 10" away was the 2x2" chunk of rusty iron that was the source of the big trashy signal. Yep, I think that kept me and whoever else went over that same bedrock from digging the signals next to it! lesson learned.... dig it all!

    Australia?

Thanks for sharing Jen! Good thinking on the Quantas-Alaska connection

    Australia?

Yep, agreed.. Iv put together a few international multi month missions and sometimes the hardest part is just deciding to pull the trigger on a ticket. A lot of times its actually cheaper to be traveling (depending on country) than spending money at home depending on how your willing to go at it. Jen what was your fav part of Australia? And is there anything you would do differently if ya went again?

    Australia?

Ok don't be jealous yet! Im just putting out the feelers, not getting too excited till iv got enough money saved to do it right. I always like to have at least one good bucket list item to work towards... otherwise what the hell am I doing with my life

    lesson in trash (and gold!)

Thanks Man, so many people here have posted finding nuggets under a can, in the same hole as five square nails, nuggets covered by rusty bits of sheet metal, or any number of things, including pre supposing a big trashy signal is just trash...(heard that one too many times!) Thanks to those who shared those experiences that I'm reminded/inspired to keep digging past my impatience, false certainty, and delusion that everyone got there before I did..

  19. Hey y'all, Worked all summer up in Washington state and was chompin the bit to get out prospecting so I made a detour to Gold Basin on my way home. I was so excited to be there before dark that I jumped out of the truck, grabbed the detector and pretty much ran out randomly through the Joshua trees there. I thought to myself whoa.. slow down there cowboy, could be gold anywhere here. So I slowed down.. walked a little further, stopped in a random place, turned on the machine and within about 2 minutes my first target was gold! After another few mins I dug one piece of trash, and then another little nugget... I thought wow, here we go! Well I spent the whole next day to find the two smallest pieces haha... After getting home to Tucson, I couldn't wait to get out again, so headed down to Greaterville, no gold but found this cool border patrol pin. After being responsible for a couple days, I blasted down to Arivaca. Spent the day like usual chasing micro pieces of rusty scrap, bird shot, and bullets...being so worn out I drove up to a worked over area I found gold in before and decided to turn off my prospecting mind and just grid an area for once. Managed to find the LAST nugget of that Patch! Pinky nail sized thick flake laying right on the surface.. Im so amazed at what gets missed and I almost walked right over it myself... Anyway, hope everyone is enjoying the fantastic weather now, look fwd to seeing everybody at the outing!

  23. hey luke, just happened upon this thread tonight and had to laugh... I remember reading this last year (before I found my first nug with a detector)... well a year later and Iv found quite a few after that first one.. (two years it took me!). and again a year later... you come down to greaterville for your first visit and scoop up five from our home turf down here! I love it, and like everyone said perseverance and persistence... Honestly id been over those same spots with two different detectors and i didnt find zilch! Just wanted to acknowledge the accomplishment and thank you for posting your experiences. Hope you make it down again and show us where the gold is!

    Greaterville Expedition

Nice going Luke! Sorry I couldnt make it down to meet up with you guys, had the family in town, next time for sure... Nice to see you scored some gold on your first trip down there, congrats! Iv been skunked the last few times there so its nice to see someones finding something!
  25. Found a lil dinker this morning and proceeded to spend the whole day getting scratched up with cats claw cause I thought I would just get in there where no one else would go... well that didnt work out very well for me so... decided to call it. On my way out, I had to stop and try one more spot before dark... glad I did... picked up the other dink, and then the flat one... then this flattened out piece that is all folded up ... really cool.. I was tempted to open it up and flatten it out but decided not too. it must be over an inch long just rolled up like a scroll..(1.9g) and then.... the fishook finish... WTF?.... soooo far away from the nearest fish.. (not even close to a wash!) amazing what you find out there...
