The strange part is, when a hard drive magnet is put to the top half of it... nothing, when moved to the lower half, it attracts, but not even enough to lift the magnet in the air.. thanks for your input!

My guess is it has magnetite in it. These types of iron laden rocks  are usually composed of more then one mineral like hematite and magnetite. You almost never see 100% composition of a single mineral.
